Allpar’s sources have said that the car will use the ZF HP90 automatic transmission, an eight-speed capable of around 650 lb-ft of torque. That sets an upper limit on the 6.2’s power output; horsepower is undetermined, with our sources still saying that Chrysler is shooting for 700, and our conservative, jaundiced view suggesting it will most likely be in the 600-650 hp range.

An eight speed, huh? I'm not sure how I feel about this. On a sedan, okay. On a performance coupe...

The ZFs are the single greatest autos made, I have no problem with one in a performance coupe.
DCT like performance without the DCT daily driving issues, and who gives a shit about the manuals anymore anyways?

So uh, no man pedal?? loosing my vote.

I would be far more interested if it had lost weight and had a nice manual or paddle option. Something more race oriented for that kind of power capacity.

You are heading deeply into crazy town, you might want to turn the car around.

The weight loss is supposedly coming down the pipeline. Remember, these are just mules.
Also, they say it will use the HP90, but they don't state it will be the only transmission option. Since the R/T and SRT 392 currently have the option to row your own, I don't see why they wouldn't keep that going.

Heading into crazy down?
I WAS BORN THERE. MOLDED BY IT. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT SANITY WAS TILL I WAS A MAN AND BY THEN IT WAS BLINDING.

If they can get it down to something reasonable, like sub 3400 lbs, I will start to get excited. Right now even if they can pull off 700 HP, they have almost a 25% weight penalty vs some of the lighter competition that are better equipped. That means a car that weighs down around 3000 lbs only needs about 525 HP to perform the same in acceleration and will always perform better in other tests based on inertia.
Right now, the only high point about the cars in my mind are the looks, but that's enough for me to be rooting for them. I hope they get to where they need to be to compete.

It's good on the Jeep SRT8, and I'm sure it would be good on the Challenger/Barracuda/whatever they name the vehicle, but I'd prefer a manual rowing option be offered.

I just want to say, for this car a manual seems pointless.
If it's supposed to be a racetrack dominator to go against the Z/28 it'll be faster with an auto, and the ZF transmissions are fantastic.

Yeah it's bulkier than its competition (Mustang, Camaro) but they're not exactly lightweights in their own right. A V6 Mustang weighs over 3400 lbs

I say a manual will be available 100% as it's the only LX car to offer one. I mean after all it is the Viper 6 speed.

Well that's not actual car weight, that's curb weight. Curb weight for a Challenger is 4032 lbs for the RT v8 vs 3600 for the Mustang GT v8. That's a big difference even using curb weights. Even using that it's over 11% difference. Still meaning the Mustang still needs 77 less HP to compete with a 700 HP Challenger in acceleration and still be 11% better in all inertia tests. Not accounting for drag or the like obviously.
When I referenced 3000 lbs I was more referring to things like hot coupes. Using a tuning example an S2000 is 31% lighter than that OEM. So with 483 HP it can run down a 700 HP Challenger. That's just the maths.

As far as great auto's, I am very impressed with the Ford-GM 6F55 in my SHO.

Chrysler has a plan for a lighter weight mid-sized RWD platform that will both cover a new Avenger and a stand alone Barracuda it having the Hellcat V8.
For over a year, sources have talked about a new mid-sized rear-drive car for Dodge and Alfa Romeo. The “D-RWD” platform would give Dodge a muscle car sized against the Camaro and
Mustang
, while bolstering Alfa Romeo credibility with a car worthy of the name. D-RWD is a joint project, centered in Auburn Hills, with embedded Fiat/Alfa engineers.

Yeah, unfortunately with the financial trouble they are facing I will believe it when I see it. Both companies have serious hurdles to actually bring it to market.

Actually Chrysler has been making money had over fist.

Nobody drives without fluids ;)
Also, this is not a hot coupe. This is a pony car. Your comparison is apples to oranges.

I'm just comparing what it would need to be to get my interest. It's still over 10% behind everything else it can easily be compared to, and about 20% to 30% behind what it would need to get me rushing to a dealership, but it will work for it's target audience. It's geared toward people who "just want it" and aren't concerned about actually pushing the car.

No, they aren't, but they are clawing their way back up.

They are simply following Jalopniks brainwashing. If it is not a diesel powered, compact wagon, with a manual, then it is not a real car.
